Welcome

This is the complete study package for Design and Analysis of Experiments — the branch of statistics that systematically plans experiments and analyses their results. The course covers ANOVA, the three classical agricultural designs (CRD, RBD, LSD), missing-value estimation and efficiency comparisons, with two worked examples per concept.

Pre-requisite: Courses 1–6, especially Inferential Statistics — F-test for variances. Familiarity with sums of squares and variance is essential.

Course Outcomes

  1. Acquaint with the role of statistics in agriculture and other fields.
  2. Apply the principles of experimental design — replication, randomization, local control.
  3. Carry out ANOVA for one-way and two-way classifications.
  4. Analyse CRD, RBD and LSD layouts; compute critical differences for treatment comparisons.
  5. Estimate missing values in RBD and LSD and recover the analysis.
  6. Compare efficiency of designs (RBD vs CRD; LSD vs RBD vs CRD).

Units in this Course

UNIT 1

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

Concept, definition, assumptions; one-way ANOVA (equal and unequal observations); two-way ANOVA — mathematical models, sums of squares, F-test.

UNIT 2

Completely Randomised Design (CRD)

Three principles of design; CRD concept, advantages, applications, layout; statistical analysis; critical differences when treatments differ.

UNIT 3

Randomised Block Design (RBD)

Concept, advantages, applications, layout; statistical analysis with worked examples; critical differences; missing-value estimation in RBD.

UNIT 4

Latin Square Design (LSD)

Concept of LSD, advantages, applications, layout; statistical analysis with three-way breakdown of variation; critical differences.

UNIT 5

Missing Values & Efficiency

Estimation of one missing value in LSD; efficiency of RBD relative to CRD; efficiency of LSD over RBD and CRD with worked problems.

PRACTICAL

Practical Course (8 Experiments)

One-way ANOVA (equal/unequal n), two-way ANOVA, CRD, RBD with missing value, LSD with missing value, efficiency comparisons.
