Welcome

This is the complete study package for Applied Statistics, covering three of the most widely used real-world applications of statistics — time series analysis, index numbers and vital statistics & demography. Each concept has two worked examples.

Pre-requisite: The earlier subjects, especially least-squares from Statistical Methods, and basic ratio & percentage arithmetic.

Course Outcomes

  1. Master forecasting techniques and their applications.
  2. Interpret and use index numbers in the business sector.
  3. Perform calculations with simple and weighted index numbers.
  4. Understand the structure of the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
  5. Apply various data-collection methods for policy planning.
  6. Construct and use life tables.
  7. Estimate and project populations using growth curves.
  8. Apply demographic concepts on real data through practicals.

Units in this Course

UNIT 1

Time Series

Components of a time series; additive, multiplicative & mixed models; estimation of trend by free-hand curve, semi-averages, least squares (linear & parabolic), moving averages.

UNIT 2

Seasonal Component

Determination of seasonal indices by Simple Averages, Ratio to Moving Averages, Ratio to Trend and Link Relatives methods; deseasonalisation.

UNIT 3

Index Numbers

Concept, construction, uses & limitations; simple & weighted aggregate indices (Laspeyres, Paasche, Marshall–Edgeworth, Fisher); time/factor reversal tests; CPI and WPI.

UNIT 4

Vital Statistics

Definition, sources & uses; measures of mortality — CDR, age-specific death rate, standardised death rate (direct & indirect); problems.

UNIT 5

Life Tables & Fertility

Construction & uses of life table, proofs of life-table functions; fertility rates (CBR, GFR, ASFR, TFR); measures of population growth — Pearl's, GRR, NRR.

PRACTICAL

Practical Course (13 Experiments)

Trend by moving averages & least squares; seasonal indices; index numbers & reversal tests; mortality, fertility & reproduction rates; life-table construction.
