Welcome
This is the complete study package for Applied Statistics II — five real-world
topics that build on Applied Statistics: growth curves, advanced index numbers,
demand analysis, psychological & educational statistics, and test reliability &
validity. Each concept has two worked examples.
Pre-requisite: Applied Statistics — particularly Unit 1 (Time Series)
and Unit 3 (Index Numbers). Statistical Methods for curve fitting via least squares.
Course Outcomes
- Understand different growth curves and methods to construct them.
- Interpret and use index-number methods commonly used in business.
- Understand demand analysis and perform elasticity calculations.
- Calculate scores specific to psychological & educational statistics.
- Apply various methods to compute test reliability and validity.
Units in this Course
UNIT 1
Growth Curves
Modified exponential, logistic and Gompertz curves; fitting by method of three selected points and partial sums; detrending and its effect on time-series components.
UNIT 2
Index Numbers (Advanced)
Base shifting; Fixed-base & Chain-base; splicing; deflating; Index of Industrial Production (IIP) — interim and revised series.
UNIT 3
Demand Analysis
Price & partial elasticities; data sources; Leontief, Pigou (time-series & family budget); Engel's law; Pareto's law of income; curves of concentration.
UNIT 4
Psychological & Educational Statistics
Sigma scaling of difficulty; Z scaling; standard, normalized, T- and percentile scores; scaling of rankings and ratings via the normal curve.
UNIT 5
Test Reliability & Validity
Error variance, index of reliability, parallel tests, test-retest, Rulon, Kuder–Richardson; validity; reliability vs validity; Intelligence Quotient (IQ).
PRACTICAL
Practical Course (12 Experiments)
Fitting all three growth curves; index-number transformations; elasticities; Pareto fit; test reliability computation.
