Importance of Statistical Quality Control — the 4 M's of SQC (Man, Machine, Material, Method). Causes of variation in manufacturing: Assignable (special) causes and Chance (random) causes. Uses of SQC. Process control versus Product control. Introduction to the Control Chart technique and the statistical basis of Shewhart control charts.
Introduction to variable-based monitoring. Construction and interpretation of the Mean (\(\bar{X}\)) and Range (R) chart used together as a pair. Construction of the Mean (\(\bar{X}\)) and Standard Deviation (S) chart pair. Both chart pairs are covered for the cases when standards are specified (given μ₀, σ₀) and when standards are unspecified (estimated from data).
Introduction to attribute-based monitoring. Construction and interpretation of the fraction defective (p) chart, number of defectives (np) chart, number of defects per unit (c) chart, and defects per unit (u) chart — both when standards are specified and when they are unspecified.
Introduction to acceptance sampling. Concept of a sampling inspection plan. Comparison between 100% inspection and sampling inspection. Producer's risk and Consumer's risk. The Operating Characteristic (OC) curve. Acceptable Quality Level (AQL), Lot Tolerance Fraction Defective (LTFD) and Lot Tolerance Percent Defective (LTPD). Average Outgoing Quality (AOQ) and Average Outgoing Quality Limit (AOQL), AOQ curve. Average Sample Number (ASN), Average Total Inspection (ATI).
Computation of probability of acceptance using Binomial distribution and Poisson approximation. Computation of AOQ and ATI. Graphical determination of AOQL. Determination of a single sampling plan by: (a) lot quality approach and (b) average quality approach.
